Lost in Translation x FACT Liverpool

Typography design

Type Motion is a programme showcasing the best examples of moving typography in art and popular culture from 1897 to the present day. Held at FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), the programme combines an immersive exhibition with a series of film screenings, panel discussions, typogrpahic posters and workshops. It is the first time the exhibition will be held in the UK, after a successful stint at ZKM Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe.

Grafik commissioned a series of typographic film posters that explore motion elements. The design is an interpreation of Sophia Coppola’s Lost in Translation. The result is a reflection of the disconnection and alienation, excitement and overwhelm during Charlotte’s taxi journey through the infamous neon signage of Shibuya, Tokyo. The loneliness and displacement that stems from cultural oddities is further reinforced through the use of vertical Japanese type setting.
